Tips for driving on our busy Motorways

Plan your trip, consult a map and check your junctions on and off the motorway, directions, north, south etc. Be familiar with any Sat Nav device...
Inspect your vehicle, tyres, lights, engine fluids, fuel etc.
M.S.M.M - Mirrors Signal, stay in your lane, mirrors, drift into the new lane. You must always signal to change lanes. You should know what’s behind and to the right, left of you at all times.
Only use the hard shoulder in the event of an emergency.

Face tyres slightly to the left; leave the vehicle from the nearside door.
​
Which way to nearest telephones? White marker posts every 100 mtrs.
​
Safest way to walk on hard shoulder? Facing towards the traffic.
​
Can we change tyres on the hard shoulder? Or do we need to call for assistance?
​
Plan some rest breaks in your journey; do not drive when over tired.
​
Use the left hand lane unless overtaking; do not hold the centre lane.
​
Forward planning is very important, look much further ahead. Practice your commentary driving.
​
Anticipate other road user’s actions.

Rules and regulations regarding ‘Smart Motorways’
​
Emergency – use of hazard lights.
​
If you stop on the hard shoulder and are able to continue with your journey, use the hard shoulder to pick your speed up before rejoining the motorway.
​
Warning triangle for normal roads, 45 mtrs, and 150 mtrs for dual carriageways. Do not use on Motorways H/C Rule 274.
​
Lone male / females should return to the vehicle if anyone stops to help other than the emergency services.
​​
Colour of cat’s eyes on the motorway. Where? / What?

National speed limit is?
​
Acceleration / de-acceleration lanes? Blind spot checks?
​
Two-second rule, importance of keeping your distance, chevrons, what happens in the wet?
​
Reading signs and taking in the information given, lane discipline is very important.
